Meditation, Breathing and the word ohm, some basic stuff...

I do caution on yoga subjects if we can stick with the basics for a moment. Like anything else in life ,misinformation or good information in the hands of those not familiar with the subject or those not taking it seriously some aspects of yoga can be quite dangerous.

Useful and healthy yoga related beginners components can be a degree of desirable meditation, basic postures and breathing techniques. Much good information is available from thousands of books, you tube components and local clubs.

For now, as a point of getting started, try this.
Sit in a comfortable position, either cross legged or in a basic simple chair, fold you hands, start breathing in and out through your nose, six count berating in....hold breath for a couple of seconds then breathing out again. Forget all the stuff about opening closing nostrils, alternate breath, simply breathe in and out, six seconds in, hold two seconds, six seconds out, wait two seconds and repeat about ten times. Watch where the air is going....the lungs...the abdomen...feel the chest filling with air and expel as much of the air as possible.

Once you've got this rhythm somewhat established you will want to add a bit of sound to it. The word is ohm.....as you breathe in, gradually change the sound from  a-o-u-m.....during the six second to twelve second exhaling period. ( Timing is not critical  for now).

The sound should be a gradual, soft  a-( like in ah) changing to o ( like in no) to u like in who and finally m.(A O U M )...in a continuous flow, between 6 and 12 seconds while breathing  out.

This will get you started,  it's the basis for beginning a relaxing method of meditation.
